Random online updates that nobody asked for are deeply cringe to me, so I’ll give you the TL;DR now: I’m going to start publishing these essays biweekly instead of weekly because my caseload is popping off. (Which is great. We love being able to pay our bills.)
Y’all are the best, and I’m not even really sure anyone needs this official update, but I thought I’d put it here anyways. Thanks for reading That’s Our Time. :)
Here’s the longer update.
It’s been six months since I launched this Substack and, you guys, it’s been an absolute delight. Just about every week, I’ve jumped in here to present a potpourri of my thoughts and feelings about therapy, reproductive mental health, and life as a therapist.
I started this Substack for a few reasons:
The gross reason: To create regular content and new SEO content for my website and brand. (YUCK.) People kept telling me that this Sisyphean task was important for my marketing efforts, and I could not imagine a more soul-sucking prospect. I’d rather file my taxes by hand or have to write 250 clinical notes in one day. So I decided that the only way I’d consistently do this was if I wrote about therapy things that mattered to me and if I gave myself permission to show up as myself rather than some buttoned-up, blank-slate professional.
The altruistic reason: To provide insights and information about mental health. Advocacy and education are pillars in my practice, so it made sense to apply it here. I always hope that folks will find these essays useful, and that they’ll maybe even feel a little less alone.
The creative reason: To have a space to write regularly. One of the most cringy facts about me is that as someone who strongly identifies as a Jo March in my trifecta of fictional archetypes (alongside Hermione Granger and Anne of Green Gables), I’m a writer. I love a space to work through rambles in my brain and put them on (digital) paper. I’m also always kicking around some spark of a plot or character in the dusty corners of my brain. Putting fiction out in the world feels just a bit too tender in this season, so I decided to start with this Substack stuff just to begin to flex that muscle.
The way that you have been engaging with my writing has been so cool – every like, comment, subscription, DM, and text about these essays feels like the kindest virtual hug. (My writing means something to someone? Truly incredible. I’m gobsmacked.)
Thank you so much for reading all of these very earnest words and for going out of your way to tell me that this Substack is meaningful to you.
All of this is to say – I guess that something is working because my clinical workload keeps growing. This is great for my bills and clinical goals, but it also means that I don’t have as much time as I did six months ago to write these essays.
So I’m going to start publishing posts biweekly. My hope is that this takes some of the extraneous pressure off this creative process, and enables me to consistently create authentic, meaningful posts that are uplifting and useful to you.
I’ve also been thinking about possibly putting some more personal essays and maybe even some short-form fiction behind the subscription paywall in the future – but we’ll see. No promises. (But also maybe let me know if this sounds interesting to you?)
So I’ll see you all back here next Friday, and then we’ll switch to biweekly after that.
Thanks for hanging in there during this random update that nobody asked for. You guys are great. Keep being wonderful and go tell somebody that they’re wonderful too. <3
